Eight to Five

               EIGHT TO FIVE
                                A Mystery Introducing Denora Donnelly

Denora Donnelly has recently signed on as the music arranger for the Venice College Marching Tigers. Her idyllic world is soon shattered by first the theft of the band's uniform fund, then the apparent suicide of the student band manager. But when a complete autopsy is done, the girl's death turns out to have been murder.

With her best friend and hairdresser, Phillipa Findley, and assistant band director Julian Broadbent in tow, Denora launches her own investigation with no member of the band or its staff above suspicion. This includes the clean cut, preppy band director, and alas, Julian himself.

An onslaught of personal setbacks including her battle with Scleroderma hinders Denora's best efforts until finally it's discovered that the murdered girl had a taste for blackmail and a long list of enemies. Now it's up to Denora, who's getting her first experience of actually marching in a halftime show, to arrange a fitting finale.

Judith Edna Earley has crafted a heroine to root for in Denora Donnelly. As Denora searches for a connection linking three mysteries – murder, forgery and theft – she battles a mystery of her own: how to cope with the side effects of a highly debilitating disease that significantly impairs her life.  She is nothing but determined as she works to bring down a killer and live an ordinary life in spite of the extraordinary challenges she faces with her health.

Earley knows how to flesh out her characters while giving you a highly descriptive picture of what life is like on a college campus. This book makes you look forward to meeting Denora Donnelly again!

I know I should have been practicing and making oboe reeds, but instead I could not put down this intriguing mystery novel.  Judith Earley has used her musical background to write a delightfully insightful glimpse into the world of some pretty disturbed musicians, and I’m especially happy to say that out of all the characters the oboist is, naturally, the most ethical and intelligent one.  This is thoroughly enjoyable reading.
