How to Look Your Best When You Don’t Feel Your Best…
And Why It Matters
by Judith Edna Earley

Ifyou are reading this, chances are that you are, or someone you know is, a woman living with an autoimmune disorder.
I have been one myself since about 1992. First the doctor thought it was Lupus, then mixed-connective tissue disease. Finally it was determined that I have Scleroderma. Not exactly CREST and not exactly systemic. But as you already know, in the world of autoimmune issues, nothing is cut and dried.
Over the years I have met women who have chosen to live well with their illnesses. I’m sure you have too…the woman who accepts herself and her situation the way it is, the woman who doesn’t give up on herself or on her life because of her medical diagnosis.
I have also met women who have chosen the opposite attitude. Because they struggle with their health, they have given up on their lives. They identify so much with their illness that it becomes who they are instead of what they have.
I decided that I wanted to be like the women in the first group. What about you?
SELF-CONFIDENCE and SELF-ESTEEM
Self-confidence is the attitude that allows us to hold an optimistic yet realistic belief about ourselves and our circumstances, and in our case, our illnesses. It is all about how much we value ourselves and how worthwhile we feel we are; in other words, the pride we feel in ourselves. It is important to have this self-confidence in order to effectively manage our health needs and our life needs. Self-esteem can affect how we act. Positive self-esteem gives us more control over our decisions and our behavior, and consequently we will get more enjoyment out of life.
CHOOSE LIFE
One of the negative perceptions that holds us down could be the idea that being ill is a character flaw and if I can fix that flaw, it will make me a better person. Plus, holding an all or nothing attitude—I am either sick or I am well and there is nothing in between—can send us spiraling down a dangerous path. The good news is that we can change the attitudes we hold about who we are in relation to our illness. We can find ways to feel better about ourselves by focusing our attention on the positive things in our lives and dumping our crippling negative attitudes.
So what is it that’s holding you back from living your life to the fullest? Maybe it’s not the fact that you are sick. Perhaps instead it’s that you don’t like what you see when you look in the mirror. And the truth is, the way we look has a powerful effect on the way that we feel about ourselves and our place in the world.
The Autoimmune Beauty Book will challenge you to set aside your tired beauty rituals—or your no beauty rituals—and apply the principle of looking your best to every aspect of your life. I mean, you have to get up and get dressed anyway; why not do it to your best advantage?

EXCERPT FROM THE INTRODUCTION
“Are you concerned about the physical changes that your illness and the medication you need to treat it have left behind? While each disorder can cause its own set of problems, there are some commonly occurring changes like rashes, bruising, hair loss, and light and dark skin discoloration. Are your eyebrows missing or your fingernails brittle? Is your face a little rounder or your lips a little thinner? Maybe you’re unhappy that your clothes don’t fit the way they used to because you have gained or lost weight.
I was in that situation and it bugged the heck out of me. I was embarrassed by my hair: it had thinned out and completely changed texture. I had light and dark pigmentation on my face, my neck, and my hands. Because my mouth had gotten smaller, my lips had gotten smaller—boy, I miss my lips! And my teeth were shifting. That left me with a very prominent gap in the front.
Through a lot of trail and error, I spent a lot of time and money figuring out what hair solutions worked best for me, which cosmetics addressed my specific problems, and how to dress my best to impress. I want to save you the frustration—not to mention the wasted dollars—as much as I can. I want to share with you not only what I have learned through my experiences, but also the wisdom and experience of experts in the industry.
Today is your day to begin to reclaim your life!”

THE AUTOIMMUNE BEAUTY BOOK
Now you might be one of those people who argue that worrying about how you look while you are battling a potentially debilitating illness is shallow and unimportant. I completely disagree. Think of a focus on your make-up, hair, and clothing—the external aspects of appearance--as a form of therapy. When you look your best, you feel your best.
While some say there is a mind-body connection, this book is not about feeling better physically. This is all about feeling better emotionally, psychologically. And chances are, this improved mental outlook can positively affect your attitudes, your choices and ultimately, your quality of life.
Face it. In today’s youth and beauty conscious world, there is no attention being paid to women who deal with the physical changes brought on by autoimmune illnesses and the medications used to treat them. The purpose of this book is to finally change all that and give us our due. The beauty and fashion and industries are neglecting a legion of women, young and old, Caucasian, African-American,
It’s time we let the world see what’s living on the inside of us shine through on the outside!
